Exercise 1 “will begin with a shared brief requiring the design of a place for community assembly and transaction in the city of Syracuse. This 'agora will be sited on a vacant lot next to Columbus Circle between the county courthouse and the Catholic cathedral. Spanning five-and-a- half-weeks this research and design exercise will integrate analyses of urban context and tectonic systems with strategies for forming public space. Students will explore urban form systems and definitions of public space, as well as tectonic vocabulary and material-space character. Generally, the objective will be to formulate and articulate project strategy at the intersection of these multiple modes of architectural design.”
