EXERCISE 1.1

“Exercise one explores tectonic and stereotomic methods to construct ‘primordial’ cubes. The tectonic may be thought of as involving an additive process, such as with frame construction (beams and columns), while the stereotomic may be thought of as involving thick walls or a subtractive process, such as with carved solids. We will consider the tectonic and stereotomic processes as equally adept at defining and making space. A combination of these strategies is also possible and their careful deployment—putting these systems into play—is at the core of this exercise. Tectonic methods will be emphasized in EX1.1 and stereotomic methods in EX1.2.”

In this exercise, we will explore the relationship between digitally carved solids and figural voids.”
